A front dispatch at 12:15 A. M. today said an eerie quiet had settled over triangle hill but the Chinese on Pike's Peak could be heard singing.
An American officer said the Reds apparently were trying to whip up their morale.
Wild charges of the Chinese against Triangle Hill and Sniper Ridge were supported by 40,000 rounds of howitzer, artillery and mortar fire.
Allied big guns and warplanes countered with tons of exploding steel shells and fire bombs.
American troops smashed the enemy's Triangle Hill assaults 300 yards from their crestline.
At Pinpoint Hill on Sniper Ridge the South Koreans gave ground in the morning but surged back in vicious close quarter combat to capture the position in the afternoon.
Seventh division officers said the enemy had plentiful reserves and the Allied troops on both hills worked swiftly to repair shell-blasted defenses in anticipation of new attacks.
The Reds, in charging through their own and Allied big gun fire, were mowed down by the hundreds but no official estimate of the enemy's losses was available.
