Be Good! Bill's Kindly Coming

The Spreckels-Standpat-Big-Business clique has shown its hand. No campaign for the recall must be made in California because "President Taft, who detests the recall, has kindly consented to come to California and aid in the exposition's ground breaking plan." The "gang" would trade off the honor of the state and all the principles of her people for a little presidential eclat at that ground breaking in San Francisco. Californians will be campaigning in October for the recall and Taft has arranged his itinerary so that he'll be in California in October. Hence, let California give up her own urgent political business, so as not to hurt the feelings of our dear, kind, anti-recall president who is swinging around the country mending his own fences. Let California stand still because she wants something that Bill Taft dislikes! Not by a long shot!

The freedom of the people from corporation-owned courts is more important than Taft or any other man. Mr. Taft comes into the west of his own volition and for the express purpose of boosting his candidacy for a second term. He's an office-hunter and as such he must answer for his opposition to popular demands. He comes to hoodwink, explain and excuse as to his acts as an office holder. His record is that of an arch foe to the reduction of prices of poor people's necessities, and there's no question of a political nature that courageous Californians should hesitate to fire at him. Oh, yes! we must be solicitous about that fair. We must be very quiet, elegant, toadyish and recherche toward Mr. Taft lest he unluckily throw the first shovelful of dirt at that ground breaking over his left shoulder instead of his right. And we're going to be solicitous. First thing, we're going to ask Taft and the Spreckels-S. P.-Otis-Citizens' Alliance bunch whether or not those fair buildings shall be erected by union labor or "scab". It is a question that's going to be put right fiercely, sooner or later, and we might as well give Taft and his boot-lickers early warning of it.
