WASHINGTON, D.C. - Announcement has just come from the Navy that the admission of colored women to the WAVES has been approved by President Roosevelt. A "limited number" of especially qualified colored women," the navy said, will be commissioned immediately as administrative officers. They will assist in planning and supervising a programme for enlistment of colored women. The navy estimated that the first enlisted women will enter training shortly after Jan 1. "Officer candidates and enlisted women will be trained at existing schools of WAVES," the navy said. "The number to be enlisted will be determined by the needs of the service." The enrollment of colored women in this branch of the war service has been vigorously agitated for months and the announcement of their admission comes as welcome news to the advocates of racial justice.
