New York Trade Sale of Tobacco.
New York, August 31.
The large and first annual trade sale of tobacco attempted in New York was commenced yesterday. About half the catalogue of 78 pages were gone through with, comprising 1,671 hhds. of Kentucky leaf and about 1,100 cases Connecticut seed leaf. The prices obtained were on the average, and especially for all good lots, above the private valuation fixed upon them. We were assured by the auctioneers that not a single lot was passed or bid in. The sale drew a large and spirited company, among whom were parties from the neighboring cities, and Quebec, in Canada. Among the purchasers were Messrs. John Anderson & Co., the tobacconists, Andrew H. Mickle & Son, Goodwin & Brother, Agnew & Son, Mr. Corbish, Crawford & Farmer, of this city, and a number of merchants from other places. The sale was considered to be a success, and gave encouragement for its future annual repetition. The sale will be continued to-day with Ohio seed leaf and bales of Havana.
