FOR PRESIDENT
OF THE UNIVERSITY.
We are glad to give space in to-day's
CHRONICLE to a thoughtful communica-
tion by Rev. W. S. LONG, D. D., Presi-
dent of Elon College, giving the requisi-
tes which the new President of the
University ought to possess. His sum-
ming up of the elements which ought
to combine to make a successful execu-
tive of that great institution is lawyer-
like and strong.
He is equally happy in naming the
man who possesses the ability, the ex-
perience, the tact and the enthusiasm to
make a successful and useful President.
It is very gratifying for us to see the al-
most unanimous acknowledgment of the
peculiar fitness of PROF. GEO. T. WINS-
TON, LL.D., for the position, and to see
that the indications are that he will be
unanimously elected. The position is
one of great responsibility, and it
is a happy omen that the successor to
Dr. Battle is so accomplished that the
high position will go to him by common
consent. If the Trustees shall at their
meeting next week elect Prof. Winston
by acclamation he will prove that the
choice is a wise one.
