Post Commander Announces Invocation of Federal Law in Twelve Counties Surrounding Fort Bragg, Effective July 31.
Fayetteville, July 22.-(AP)— Lieutenant Colonel Landon C. Rosser, acting post commander of Fort Bragg, today issued a memorandum announcing that the May act will be invoked in twelve North Carolina counties surrounding Fort Bragg, effective midnight July 31.
The May act makes prostitution near Army establishments a federal offense, punishable by a heavy fine and--or a prison sentence.
The counties in which the act will be invoked are Bladen, Cumberland, Hoke, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Moore, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson, Scotland and Wake. Principal towns to be affected are Raleigh, Fayetteville and smaller centers such as Sanford, Smithfield, Dunn, Lumberton and Rockingham.
The memorandum issued by Rosser said the action was being taken on the advice of Secretary of War Stimson to help "protect the health, efficiency and welfare of Army personnel."
The Fort Bragg commandant said Governor Broughton, the State highway patrol and other law enforcement officers in the area affected would be notified of the action today.
