ASPHALT COMPANY THROWS OUT HINT OF GRAFTING.

CAMDEN, Oct. 21.-Charges of trickery, whereby favored paving companies are allowed to exact exorbitant prices for their work and the city is made to pay the highest price for its street paving, are intimated in a letter of protest which the Barber Asphalt Company has sent to the City Council. The letter claims that a product of the Warren Brothers Company, whose composition is not patented, but whose trade name, "Bitulithic," has been copyrighted, has to be used on all Camden street paving.

The advertisement for bids appeared on October 13, and expressly stated among the specifications that Warren Brothers' bitulithic must be used. The Barber company sent in a bid at $1.69 a square yard, agreeing to use exactly the same composition as bitulithic, but stating that they would not use the Warren Brothers Company's own composition because it would cost them $1.45, whereas they could manufacture their own at $1 less than this price and yet have it exactly the same. Hints of graft in the deal are made in the letter.
