Manhattan Takes to Poetry and Promises to Commit Suicide,
SPOKANE, Wash., Sept. 4, 1892.--To the Editor of The Independent: Dear Sir--I have composed the following national poem which I entitle, "Columbia." It runs as follows:
No north, no south, no east, no west,
But just a country of the blest
Where all are free their God to please,
Where all can work or take their ease;
Can worship God as they think best,
No heretic disturbs their rest.
No north, no south, no east, no west,
But just a land that God has blest.
