The account of the death of his Imperial Majesty of Hayti, John James Dessalines, copied into this paper from the Petit Censeur a few days ago, is at least premature. We have in our possession the Gazette Politique et Commerciale d'Hayti of the 6th of last month, from which (if we have leisure) we will give some translations in the Mercantile Advertiser tomorrow.
We learn from Port-au-Prince, that the British have actually got to Cape Nichola Mole, where they have landed 1500 troops, and had laying off the harbour two frigates and a smaller vessel.--And we also learn, that great jealousies subsist between the blacks and mulattoes of the new empire and that an insurrection is considered at no distant period.
There was a well grounded opinion that Christophe would ere long become Emperor, as Dessalines's popularity was daily declining, and that of Christophe increasing. That some important change is about to take place in that quarter is very evident; how or what manner permanent tranquility is to be established is difficult to foresee.--The probability that the whole island will soon be again under the government of some European power.
