VANDALIA, ILL., Oct. 19.- (P) Sheriff C. F. Cheshier said today that he found the 19-year-old wife of a 62-year-old farmer chained in bed, behind locked doors, when he went to the home to arrest the husband on an assault charge.
The sheriff said the farmer, Neal Cahoon, was being held on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, filed by three railroad section hands.
Cheshier said he found the young mother chained behind bolted doors during an investigation in connection with Cahoon's arrest Saturday.
The section-hands swore out a complaint accusing the aged farmer of forcing them at the point of a gun to sign a written statement that they had been intimate with his wife, who is the mother of a two-months-old baby.
"Once inside," he declared, "I found the woman sitting up in bed, securely tied with chains around her waist and ankles.
A 60-pound rock was attached to the end of one of the chains.
The baby was lying on the bed beside her. Their clothing was locked in the corn crib."
He said the young woman did not appear alarmed and he quoted her as saying her husband "always chained me up when he went away for fear I would run off." Cahoon gave him the same reason for chaining her. Cheshier added.
Cahoon remained in jail in lieu of $1,000 bail on the assault charge.
