of consideration, and after many days of speech making, trying to convince the public that the McCarran bill was a bad bill, the opponents gave up their fight. Just how they or anyone else could favor letting down the bars to millions or more immigrants even before we have half-way assimilated those already in our nation was beyond my comprehension. But, there seems to be those who are more intent upon pleasing aliens and foreigners and their kinspeople in this country. These liberal Senators talk a great deal about majority rule until they reach the point where majority is against them. They then set up a different sort of "howl." When Senator McFarland raised the question of filibuster, he was met with the statement "Oh, no," this Senator said, "this is not a filibuster. We are merely stating the facts." That was after they had consumed about ten days of the Senator's time. In other words, the filibuster is a terrible thing except when the "liberal" Senators want to use it.

STATE CONVENTION

I got to Raleigh last Thursday in time for the State Convention, but flew right back, as it appeared that the immigration bill was coming to a vote and we did not know at that time that the liberals would "throw in the sponge" quite so promptly. The Convention was a very pleasant and harmonious affair and the public now knows the results. The big issue was between those who support Senator Russell for the Democratic nomination and those who do not. I was glad to note the very great popularity of Senator Russell. In a test vote in the 4th District, Mr. Leroy Martin of Raleigh, representing the Russell sentiment, defeated Judge Hatch by a vote of approximately two to one for delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Former Governor and Senator Morrison made a splendid speech on behalf of Russell, as did my colleague, Senator Hoey. I also made a few remarks. The more that the campaign develops, the more I am convinced that Senator Russell has a better and better chance. His great ability and his wonderful record cannot be minimized by the left-wing element. For the first time in a hundred years, we have a man that the South can be proud of and one recognized throughout the nation at large. I believe that Senator Russell has an excellent chance of getting the nomination with his supporters remaining vigorous and positive.
