BALTIMORE RAIL ROAD
We understand that a critical examination of the entire line of this first division of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road, between this city and Elliott's Mills, was made on Tuesday last by the President and Engineers of the Company. About seven and a quarter miles of the single track, from the dy to the point where the road strikes the Patapsco, are laid on wooden sleepers, and the remaining six and three quarter miles on stone blocks. Such is the stability of this mode of construction, that in about sixteen thousand blocks only forty were observed to be the least affected by the pressure of a waggon carrying five tons -- Measures were taken to have these defects, with a few others immediately rectified.
A short distance from Elliott's Mills, a second track has been constructed by laying down stone rails, upon which the iron bars are fastened. This mode has been found to answer perfectly well, while the durability of the materials of which it is composed ensures it a decided preference. We understand that its cost is less than that of a road constructed of wood, and that proposals have been made for completing a considerable portion of the second division in this manner. The operation of laying down the rails on the first thirteen miles, was completed in five weeks. Twenty-six miles are graded and prepared for the rails.
We take great pleasure in being enabled further to add, that from information recently received from the commissioners appointed to locate the Road and the Canal between the Point of Rocks and Harpers Ferry, there no longer remains a doubt but that there is ample room for both works through this pass, so that an amicable adjustment of the disputes between the two companies will easily be effected. -- Balt.
