MARKED UNCERTAINTY AND HESITATION IN THE TONE OF
SPECULATIVE SENTIMENT
CLOSE WAS QUIET.
By the Associated Press.
New York. July 21.—There was a marked hesitation and uncertainty in the tone of the speculative sentiment today and neither the occasional advances nor intervening reactions proceeded for an account of the room trading element following the movement. There was a constant wavering of prices which gave the market an unstable appearance but without developing any marked weakness on reactions. Union Pacific's aggressive rise of a point weakened some the confidence in promises that the stock was to touch par on the movement, but heavy realizing encountered on this advance aroused new skepticism over the stability of the market after Union Pacific had fallen back on the upward movement. Reading begot little enthusiasm in any speculative following.
A fall of 1¼ in Amalgamated Copper measured the disappointment of those who had expected an increase over regular dividend declaration.
Call money was offered with great freedom at 1 per cent. Prices sold off to the lowest late in the day, but the closing was quiet and steady.
