Full Text
Senator Edmunds is a queer old fellow, says the Chicago Herald. A week or two ago he obtained leave of absence from the senate for six days on account of ill health. It was supposed he was going to the seaside or to the mountains of his own Vermont to recuperate, but instead he went to Welcker's hotel and registered. There he lived for five or six days, and then returned to the senate apparently in his usual health.
The senator has a handsome residence out on Massachusetts avenue, which is noted among other things for its private stairway by which the senator's favorite dog climbs from his kennel to the senator's library. The senator's family is away for the summer, and the front door and windows are barred over with boards. On the boards which cover the main entrance is painted the sign, in big black letters, "Electric Alarm." Nobody knows what it means, for there are no wires or other signs of an alarm contrivance.
