THE EDITOR:

The May 19th issue of The Lexington Advertiser and Durant News carried a news article of the meeting held in Lexington on the Tuesday night preceding in regard to the organization of a state-affiliated Parent-Teacher Association.

Although the Article undertook to report the remarks which were made by me at the meeting, it omitted entirely the following matters which I presented and which appear to me to be vitally related to the question of the desirability of having a state-affiliated PTA in Lexington:

1. Affiliation with the State PTA automatically carries with it affiliation with the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and automatically requires that a portion of each members dues goes to the National organization.

2. The National PTA's official book "Policies and Practices" states:

"The National Congress urges parent teacher leaders in co-operation with schools and other governmental authorities in each community to study and pursue effective means in working toward the integrated education for all children." (Pages 45 and 46 of the above book).

3. In Montgomery County, Alabama, in 1957, 22 out of the 25 PTA Associations in that county withdrew from the National and State organizations because of the National's strong stand for integration, and because the state organization was bound to the policy of the National organization. These 22 which withdrew became active, effective local organizations.

4. In the recent school crisis in that state, the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers supported a program which would allow the integration of the schools of Virginia. (The Hopewell Va. News, Tues. Mar. 10, 1959.)

5. The column of Tom Eth. ridge in the May 5, 1960 issue of the Clarion-Ledger contains the following statements:

"In Atlanta, the Georgia PTA has just gone on record in favor of uninterrupted public school- ing'- even though it means some degree of integration. State officials are trying desperately to 'hold the line' in Georgia, where Atlanta's school system is under federal court orders to come up with a desegregation program.

"Atlanta's liberal' press hailed the PTA resolution, which obviously gratifies NAACP leadership."

6. In central Florida, local PTA units in eight cities recently withdrew from both the State and National organizations because of the active support of UNESCO by the National Congress of PTA. (American Mercury Magazine, February 1960, pages 33 and 34)

UNESCO, a division of the United Nations, is actively promoting the ideas of world government and world control of education, which are two of the main aims of international communism.

Respectfully,

Edwin White

Main Argument

opposes affiliating lexington's pta with the state organization because it automatically links to the national pta, which supports school integration and unesco's promotion of world government and communism, as evidenced by withdrawals in other states.
