An amusing story is told of Garibaldi,
On the eve of his departure from Nice for
Turin to take his seat in the Parliament, a
grand dinner was given to him at the hotel,
and at its conclusion two carriages came to
the door, one for Garibaldi, and the other
for his trunks. The servants were sent to
his room for his baggage, and soon returned
ostentatiously bearing a pair of doctor's
saddlebags, miserably dilapidated, contain-
ing two shirts, two handkerchiefs and two
pairs of socks. With this extensive ward-
robe Garibaldi departed for Turin as the
representative of Nice.
