Rising Sun Becomes "Friendly Town"

The local Tribune Fresh Air Fund Committee is happy to report that forty-two children have been invited to this community. These Fresh Air Children from New York City will arrive in Rising Sun, Friday, July 22.

Those who will entertain these children are as follows: Mrs. H. C. Jones, Mrs. George L. Ewing. Mrs. G. W. McVey, Mrs. Frank Jugler, Mrs. H. V. Kincaid, Mrs. Harvey Townsend, Mrs. Francis Keppel, Mrs. Boyd Etter, Mrs. G. L. Wiley, Mrs. Wiletta Harris, Mrs. Ida Edwards, Mrs. E. L. Haines, Miss Lorraine Fassitt, Mrs. Iva McKinney, Mrs. Wm. M. This Home Missionary enterprise is interdenominational and more than half a century old, but the need for this particular work was never more urgent than at present. The emergency of other years has culminated in a social disaster this year, and the verdict of the churches and social workers of New York City is that "they can no longer do this job alone." These children are not the problem of New York City alone, but of the entire United States; people everywhere are more than willing to help. Aliens come in through New York, our largest port, and for awhile and for many reasons they are not able to move. It is not usually their intention to come to New York. They mean to come to the United States. They must become American citizens, they must be assimilated and they must finally take their places for either bad or good in every section of the country. Is it not then the duty of the people of all these sections to help shoulder the burden of making them physically, mentally morally and spiritually what they should finally be citizens as good as we or better.

This project gives the under-privileged child of the slums a chance at better home environment at the most impression-able time in his life.

He built a house, time laid it in the dust;
He wrote a book, its title now forgot;
He ruled a city, but his name is not
On any tablet graven, or where rust
Can gather from disuse, or marble bust.
He took a child from out a wretched cot,
Who on the state dishonor might have brought,
And reared him to Christian's hope and trust.
The boy, to manhood grown, became a light
To many souls, and preached for human need
The wondrous love of the Omnipotent.
The work has multiplied, like stars at night,
When darkness deepens, every noble deed
Lasts longer than a granite monument.
