Full Text
It appears, after all, that the election in the State of New-Jersey, has terminated, as usual in favour of Democracy.
The present incumbents of office, (we have no particular allusion to the Secretary of the Treasury,) remind one of the dreadful state of political perversion, which a certain dramatist describes, as having once existed in the empire of the animals. The Wolves were the financiers, Foxes their secretaries; Pigeons presided in the criminal courts, and Tigers in the courts of equity.—The laws of Chastity were regulated by the He Goats; Hares were the soldiers, and Lions and Elephants staid by the baggage. "The Ass was the Ambassador of the Empire, and the Mole Inspector-General of the whole Administration. Those whom the Wolf did not devour, the Fox pillaged. Whoever escaped from him was knocked down by the Ass. The Tiger murdered innocents, whilst robbers and assassins were pardoned by the Pigeon—And at last, when each laid down his office; the Mole declared, that all were well discharged! But did the animals acquiesce in this decision? No. They withdrew their confidence from the Wolves, the Foxes, the Asses and the Mole, who had been selected to rule over them, and changed their government. Let the people of America learn wisdom from the beasts of the field."
