Fred W. Upham Lumber Company of Chicago Will Establish Lumber Yard Here.

Cairo is to have a new lumber yard. Important negotiations that have been pending for the past two days were closed last night in the form of a lease of a generous part of the property fronting Sycamore street and just south of the Illinois Central bridge and belonging to the Himmelberger interests to the Fred W. Upham Lumber company of Chicago. Mr. O. O. Agler, secretary and treasurer of the corporation named and the active head of the company, arrived in the city Wednesday accompanied by Mr. J. W. Bennett, of the sales department, and Mr. James T. Walsh, office manager, and after quietly investigating the local situation last night closed the deal referred to for the tract of land named. Included with the land, which amounts to about four acres, is one-half of the office building at present used by the Himmelberger-Harrison Lumber company, which will be used by the Upham company as its office.

The Fred W. Upham Lumber company is one of the oldest and strongest of the Chicago companies engaged in the lumber business. Mr. Fred W. Upham, its president, is well known in this city and has frequently visited here in connection with his extensive lumber interests in this part of the country. Mr. Upham is prominently identified with Cook county politics and is a close personal friend of the Republican nominee, Mr. Deneen. Mr. Agler, who closed the deal yesterday, is regarded as one of the best posted lumbermen in the west and has served as president of the Chicago Lumbermen's association. Mr. Walsh, in charge of the company's Chicago office, needs no introduction as he is a Cairo boy, typical in the success he has achieved. Mr. Walsh has been with the company for several years and has rapidly risen to his present position.

Mr. Agler when interviewed by a Bulletin reporter paid the city a very high compliment in referring to its shipping facilities. He stated that it was, in his opinion, the best distributing point in the Mississippi valley. The Fred W. Upham Lumber company has had an office at Memphis for three years, but finds that Cairo has many advantages to the lumberman which Memphis does not possess. This is particularly true of stocks up the Cumberland and Tennessee rivers, which can easily be brought to Cairo, down stream, and from this point distributed north, east or west as occasion requires. Mr. Agler gave it as his opinion that lumber would begin to be shipped in within thirty days. The character of woods carried in stock will be oak, ash, poplar, gum and cottonwood.

Mr. Agler and Mr. Walsh returned to Chicago last night Mr. Bennett leaving for Missouri points during the afternoon.
