BY MAX ADELER,
OUR SENSATION STORY.
We have received several hundred letters concerning the continuation of our startling story about Bernardo del Gindodo, and we are sorry to say that the writers express but one opinion. The following extracts from the communications will indicate the general drift sentiment upon the subject: "Of course, stop the story; and then shoot the author." "The publishers are right; a story like that would sink any paper." "Nobody but a fool would write such a story." "If you run in any more of that narrative I will set fire to your shanty." "When I read the first chapter I cursed Christopher Columbus for discovering the country and making such a crime possible." "The author is not well. He ought to have something, and then go to an asylum." "If you ask me what I think about that story, all I have to say is that if a man brought a narrative like that to me, I would certainly butcher him in the coldest blood I could find." "Don't give us any more Bernardo. The author hasn't as much talent as a cream-colored cow." "You can do only one thing in common decency with that tale, and that is to smother it right off. I never read a sicker story," etc., etc. We should judge, then, from the general tone of these letters that the public incline slightly—very slightly—to side with the publishers, and to regard our story with a feeling hardly as enthusiastic as we had expected. In that case we submit. We shall continue the tale no longer. Bernardo's sorrows shall remain unrevealed, and nobody shall ever know whether he married, or remained single, or poisoned himself, or became bald, or had torpidity of the liver, or went to Congress. These things shall remain hidden from a cold and unsympathetic world. And hereafter, when we want to write a story, we will first buy up the paper, and tell the tale in poetry, and obtain an Act of Legislature making it a capital offense for any man to refuse to read it. Then we will run it through the paper for fifteen years, until the whole community becomes crazy. We live now only for revenge.
