St. Louis, 16th June, 1806.

SIR;

From your highly unwarrantable conduct towards me for some time past, much to my injury, and increased by the offices which you hold, I have to demand from you that satisfaction due to an injured man, and which you as a gentleman are bound to give. My friend Captain Murphy, will make with you the necessary arrangements, for an interview on the Eastern side of the Mississippi.

After the above communication was received by Mr. Donaldson, instead of replying, as a man of honour ought to have done, he sneaked off to Mr. Justice Browne, and swore the peace. Not contented with this meanness, he commenced an action of trespass, assault against me—damage, one thousand dollars; also an action against my friend Capt. Murphy—damage, two thousand dollars. The sheriff had it not in his power to serve the several processes in twenty-two days. In the mean time, I made the following communication to the public, by posting it up in the most public places of this town.

TO THE PUBLIC.

Circumstances have occurred, which justify me in publishing to the world, that James Lowrey Donaldson, Commissioner and Recorder of land titles, and Attorney-General of Louisiana, is a base coward, an equivocating rascal, and despicable poltroon; who has fled to the other sex, to screen himself from merited chastisement, and whose malignity of heart, added to a base cringing servility to despotic mandates, has impelled him to assassinate the reputation of one, whom he has not courage to meet, nor justice to make reparation to.

At the same time, my friend waited on him with the following note.

7th July, 1806.

SIR;

If you have any reply to make, to wipe off what I have said of you by public advertisements, a copy of which is herewith enclosed, my friend Capt. Murphy, will be found at home, ready to receive any communication you may wish to make, until to-morrow at nine o'clock, A. M. Should I not hear from you before that time, I shall surrender myself to the sheriff, on the two processes which you have (as I learn,) nearly issued against me.

The time specified in the above, having expired, without receiving any communication from Mr. Donaldson, the undersigned informed the sheriff where he was, and desired him to wait on him, which he did accordingly; where the several processes were executed, and bail entered accordingly.
