ACKNOWLEDGES THE CORN
A FLOUNDERING DEFENSE OF BRAY IN THE NEWS.
Admits the Appeal's Charges, but Disputes the Dates.

The defense in the News of an anonymous lunatic calling himself Justice, is already the laughing stock of the town.
There are two lunatics in fact, defending Bray anonymously. One of his defenders, defends him on the ground that he is only getting $25 extra money a month out of the county treasury and the other defends him on the ground that he only gets five.

If he gets but one dollar a year out of the county beyond his salary he is violating the law and liable to fine, imprisonment and removal from office. Here is the law:

Section 1963 of the Revised Statutes reads:
"No member of the Board of County Commissioners shall be interested directly or indirectly in any property purchased for the use of the city, or in any purchase or sale of property belonging to the county, nor in any contract made by the county for the erection of public buildings, the opening or improvement of roads, or the building of bridges or for other purposes, and a violation of this section shall be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $100, and not exceeding $500, and shall be cause for removal from office."

Here is a fair sample of the argument from the thrifty commissioner.
The statement that a bill of $41 was allowed Mr. Bray on May 31, 1892 is absolutely false as shown by the records.
The Appeal's statement regarding that particular bill was incorrect. It was filed May 31, and allowed June 4th. The Appeal quoted the day of filing instead of the day of allowance,
To be more explicit we give the bill in full, the bill which the News pronounces "absolutely false."

While Mr. Bray has been doing a pretty good thing out of his connection with the county, he has done even better with the city, for the year ending July 30, 1892:

Now the peculiar thing about the December allowance is that Bray was allowed $341 for street work, when C. A. Ambrose offered to do the same work at a previous meeting for $310, and a bid was also in as low as $250. This is pleasant reading for the taxpayers of Ormsby.

If the anonymous correspondent who uses the words, coward and liar so freely will come out from behind his mask and debate this proposition in public with the Editor of the Appeal, for the benefit of a taxpayer's audience the Appeal will stand half the hall rent.
