Third Verse to "Gradatim" by Josiah Holland.
We rise by the things that are under our feet.
By what we have mastered of good or gain:
By the pride deposed or the passion slain.
And the vanquished ills that we hourly meet.
We hope by the end to be wiser and stronger,
To be more self-trusting, more patient, more brave,
And, therefore, in labor to wait with a smile,
For the end of the journey, however long it may be.
