SPRINGFIELD-(INS)- Former heavyweight king Joe Louis Monday called on Gov. Adlai Stevenson and said he will campaign for the Democratic presidential candidate in California, New York and Michigan.
Louis, who described himself as a life-long Republican, said he had switched to the Democrats because they "are working on a program to fit all groups of people."
The one time boxing champion charged that Gen. Eisenhower, the Republican candidate, is "conducting two campaigns-one for the South and one for the north."
On the other hand, he says, Stevenson "talks sense" and predicted that "the American Negro is going to go big for him."
Louis said he will speak in California on October 23, join Stevenson at a rally in Harlem on October 27 and attend a rally in Detroit on October 30. He said he did not know yet the site of the California appearance.
