RIO JANEIRO.
Copy of a letter, dated Rio de Janeiro, March 7, 1823, to a merchant in Alexandria.
"Since our last of the 15th ult we have no change to note in our market except in the article of codfish, which was sold last week at $8 per quintal, but which will fall again as soon as lent is over, and the cargoes shall have arrived, which are on the way. Flour moves slowly at $9 a 9 50. One Philadelphia vessel which has been here upwards of a month with 2000 barrels, has only sold about 200, and a Salem ship with 2500 bbls. which has been here nearly as long has only sold about the same quantity. The brig Cygnet with 500 bbls. arrived from Philadelphia on the 3d inst. We do not look for many arrivals until the rivers open in the U. S. and we have on hand a stock sufficient to keep down the market for a month or two. We have no advices from the river Plate, later than the 24th Jan. adverse winds prevailing at this season, and we can, therefore, say nothing of the crops.
As we do not wish to put our correspondents to the expense of postage, in giving them unfavorable news, we will thank you to show this letter to such of our friends as you may think proper."
