Ike Asks Legion Chief To 'Fact' Find' In Europe

ST. LOUIS -(INS)- Lewis K. Gough, national commander of the American Legion, Monday announced in St. Louis he will make a fact-finding tour of Europe next month at the request of President Eisenhower.

Purpose of the tour will be to determine the progress of America's psychological warfare program, the mutual security program and NATO.

Gough stated the tour was suggested by Eisenhower after completion of a similar visit to the Far East last fall. The unofficial tour was also requested by Mutual Security Director Harold Stassen and Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson.

He is scheduled to meet with James Conant, U. S. high commissioner in Germany and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of West Germany; Italy's Prime Minister DeGasperi and Claire Luce Booth, American ambassador to Italy; Premier Joseph Laniel of France and NATO Commander Gen. Alfred Gruenther.

While in West Germany, Gough intends to question refugees and escapees from behind the Iron Curtain about the effectiveness of America's propaganda program.
