Berchen in Norway, Jan. 14.
The French squadron of ships of war was these three weeks ready to set sail: kind providence seems to have retained those intrepid and generous Frenchmen, in order to add to their distinguished character, the glory of having saved the city of Bergen, which without their assistance must have been totally consumed by the flames of the 20th inst. Among the Seamen, who braved the most eminent dangers in extinguishing the fire and rushed dauntless in the midst of the flames and snatched trembling women and children out of the arms of death, there was one found drunk: his comrades arrested him immediately and conducted him to prison. On the next day a deputation of the magistrates of Bergen solicited his liberty; but the commander of the French squadron replied that whoever could forget his duty so far as to abandon himself to liquor, at the moment when the lives and properties of his fellow creatures were to be saved, was unworthy the name of a Frenchman and ought therefore to be severely punished.
We expect that the wind being now fair the French convoy accompanied by the squadron, will set sail this day.
