The New York letter is unavoidably crowded out. Miss Daley, who is a mistress of sarcasm, comments upon the bill passed by the legislature creating an excise commission of seven with a salary of $2,000.00 per annum. Of the veto of the high license bill by Gov. Hill because it was "unreasonable and likely to be productive of great inconvenience or hardship," Miss Daley says:
One cannot help reflecting upon the "inconvenience and hardship" imposed upon the women and children of the state by the free rum traffic and longing impatiently for the day when women shall have a voice in the law-making power. Governor Hill caters to what he doubtless believes to be a great political power that has control of the nominating and electing of governors and presidents, but in reality this short-sighted self-seeker has but weakened the chances of his party for success in the state, and brought upon himself a deserved contempt.
