Lines--To Jennie.
BY OHMAYANDAH.
I am thinking, Jennie, thinking
Of the merry long ago,
When life was an untroubled day;
And it merrily did flow
As does the silvery streamlet,
And its rippling waves along:
Of the merry days we have spent,
When we sang life's song.
We were young and thoughtless then,
We felt not life's fitful care;
We knew not that trials waiting
And life's burden we must bear.
We have sported through the woods,
And plucked the violets bloom,
We little thought that time passed by
Swiftly and so soon.
Ah! Jennie, those were joyous times,
They even now seem to teem
With childhood's memories rich and pure
And hope's bright castled dream.
When night, its ebon curtain draws.
And stars begin to appear,
Then I fancy thou'rt beside me
And I drop a gentle tear.
The orchard, and th' old school-house
With memories dreams are fraught,
The meadow, too, with clover blossoms
Where we have enjoyment sought,
The old hill we have climbed up
And gathered berries red,
Ah! those were jovial times, Jennie,
A merry life we led.
Years have passed away, Jennie,
Since I bade adieu to thee,
I remember well the parting.
And pearly tear-drops glistened
When thou bid'st me farewell.
Who can tell the anguish, Jennie,
That did my bosom swell.
Oh, let me roam where e'er I may,
In far off distant land.
My mind will wander back, Jennie,
To the merry happy band
That was wont to sit 'neath th'oak tree
To pass the hours away,
Twill wander back, far back, Jennie.
To our childhood's sunny day.
