From the West Indies -The New Haven Herald says :-"By the arrivals at that port from the West Indies yesterday, we learn that the "beginning of the end" of the abolition of slavery in the English Islands had commenced.

In one of the Islands (Antigua or St. Kitts,) the Governor called together a portion of the most intelligent of the slaves, and informed them of the conditions upon which they were to be made free, and the course to be pursued for that purpose. A spirit of revolt was immediately manifested, and martial law was about to be proclaimed for the protection of the whites. We could not see the captains to get particulars.

Alexandria, Aug 26.

FROM Barbados.—By the schooner Hope, Captain Thompson, at this port from Barbados, whence she sailed on the 7th instant, we have advices from that island up to that time. A letter dated the 4th, received by a mercantile house in this place, says: "On the 1st instant slavery in these colonies became extinct, and the new system commenced. Our negroes work as cheerfully, and are as quiet and submissive, as they ever were; from this we may infer that the measure will work well. There is every prospect of a good crop next year." We learn that there was no news of any moment.—Gazette.
