One Father Says to Another
"Your girl and my boy are growing up. I am going to give my boy every possible chance myself and demand of society that it help him by not defeating any of those chances. I want him educated, his health and morals properly protected. I insist that you lend your neighborly and citizenly assistance to this end. But I don't propose to have any 'Votes for Women' nonsense thrust on me by you. If all educational institutions are not open to your girl, I don't mind. If she suffers in health or morals by the sins of others, even if she is orphaned and penniless, I shall not lift a hand. If her property is taxed without her consent, is that anything to ME?
"When my boy becomes a man, I want him to be inferior to no one. When your girl becomes a woman, I desire her to be hampered and discriminated against as much as possible, I want you to vote to preserve the liberties of my boy, but I shall vote to withhold the liberties of your girl.
"I am proud of what my forbears accomplished for human freedom, but when I have an opportunity to uphold this ideal I shall do my little worst to shatter it."
