REPUBLIC STEEL SUES

Cleveland, O., May 23.—Republic Steel Corp., principal target of the CIO in its 1937 strike against "little steel," struck back today with a $7,500,000 damage suit.

Republic, the nation's third largest steel producer, in a federal court action named John L. Lewis, CIO chieftain; Philip Murray, CIO V-P, and other officers of the CIO and its constituent Steel Workers Organization Committee and Amalgamated Association of Iron, Tin and Steel Workers of North America.

These defendants, as were approximately 700 Ohioans who Republic identified as "individual strikers and union officers."

Republic charges a conspiracy to close its plants. Tom Girdler is head of the Republic Co.

The suit is based on the Clayton Act allowing treble damages and attorneys fees. Republic claimed damages of 2,500,000.
